Let me tell you something.
I have stood on a beach in a hurricane.
Full glam, dress bagged and ready, watching palm trees bend sideways while a wedding planner calmly rerouted an entire ceremony indoors like it was Tuesday. That’s the moment I understood: a destination wedding is one of the most magical choices a couple can make, but nobody hands you the instruction manual.
So here’s the thing: there is no wrong way to get married.
Church wedding, courthouse, elopement with your five favorite people, or a full send to paradise, whatever feels like you is the right choice. But if a destination wedding is even a maybe for you, let’s demystify it.
Because you deserve real answers, not just Pinterest boards.

“Are destination weddings actually cheaper?”
Here’s the honest answer: it depends.
An all-inclusive resort wedding in the Caribbean usually bundles your food, drinks, and basic decor into one package, and because it’s closer to home, more of your people can actually make it. That’s real value, even if it’s not always “cheap. Just know your photographer, DJ, hair and makeup, and any upgraded decor are typically extra. Budget for those separately.
Head somewhere more exotic (Europe, say) and you’re essentially planning a full traditional wedding with an on-site planner, just with better views. Expect a higher price tag, a smaller guest count (cost does that), and a longer trip than the 3-4 nights typical of an all-inclusive.
Neither is right or wrong.
They’re just different investments in different experiences.

“Will our families actually show up?”
I won’t sugarcoat this one: it depends, and only you know your family well enough to guess.
Here’s the truth nobody wants to say out loud: everyone will have an opinion.
The venue, the dress, the menu, even your colors. Everyone becomes a wedding expert overnight. But this is your day, and you are allowed to run it that way. I know that’s easier said than done.
Say it anyway.
My advice?
Have the real conversation early, with the core people you actually want there: parents, grandparents, siblings, your closest circle. Talk budget with them honestly. Nobody wants to pick a resort that prices out the people they love most. Get a real read on who’s in before you fall in love with a venue. Honestly, this should be your very first conversation once you decide to go the destination route.
It’s the single most useful thing you can hand your travel advisor when the search begins.

“How do we handle the legal paperwork?”
Every country writes its own rules, and some of them will surprise you.
Did you know Mexico requires a blood test proving you’re not blood relatives? Yes. That’s still very real, very required, and very much not something you want to discover a week before your flight.
Most couples sidestep the paperwork maze entirely by legally marrying in the U.S. beforehand, often a quiet courthouse ceremony in front of a Justice of the Peace. The destination ceremony becomes a beautiful, symbolic celebration rather than the legal one.
Bonus: it also means the loved ones who couldn’t make the trip still got to witness the “legal” moment with you.

“What happens if it storms on our wedding day?”
Let me tell you: I have lived this question, not just answered it.
I was a guest at a destination wedding that collided with a hurricane. It happens. And if you’re marrying during a season known for severe weather, this needs to be one of the first questions you ask your venue.
Reputable venues have done this before. They have backup locations, contingency plans, and staff who will calmly walk you through it if weather is closing in. What you’ll need to pack, alongside your dress, is patience. Mother Nature does not RSVP. If conditions turn dangerous, your venue will prioritize your and your guests’ safety above the schedule.
Every time.
As it should be.

“Can we really trust a planner we’ve never met, in a country we’ve never been to?”
That, my friend, is the million-dollar question.
Many all-inclusive resorts staff their own in-house planners, and since your payment goes directly to the resort, there’s a built-in layer of accountability. Choose to go off-resort, though, and you’ll need to find and vet a planner yourself.
So vet them like you mean it.
Ask direct questions about their experience and their relationship with the venue.
Request references, and actually call them.
Search their name in wedding Facebook groups.
Look for a real website, an active social presence, a track record. If you’re working with a travel advisor already, ask who they trust.
Do the homework.
And when it’s time to pay, use a credit card, not a wire transfer or debit card. Credit cards come with real fraud protections that the others simply don’t offer. There’s no foolproof system here, but there is a smart one.
Use it.
