One of the hardest issues I had during my journey to Tokyo was the food. Japan utilizes the resources around them…which means a lot of seafood and fish as well as pork.
Sooooo…I don’t really eat those things which makes finding food really hard.
So you have no idea how excited I was to find a Korean Soul Food restaurant upstairs from the knife shop in Shibuya. Again…the excitement!!!!
So up the stairs me and my friends go. We had our translation apps ready and we wanted some Korean soul food. The menu is full of pictures of food that looks amazing! Same with the drinks. One of the dishes that caught our eyes was different types of fried chicken with melted cheese. I’m talking honey butter garlic, spicy, regular, parmesan garlic, and so much more!!! It was amazing!!!!
The waitress comes and we proceed to use our translation apps to order our food. We see there’s an obvious language barrier so we started pointing to things on the menu. We knew we were overcoming that language barrier. What we wanted was a fried chicken platter with 3 different types of chicken with melted cheese. There were 6 pieces of chicken per flavor, which means 18 pieces of chicken, which is more than enough for 3 people. We also ordered some appetizers. So definitely more than enough food.
Our apps come. They were amazing. Our drinks come. Again…amazing. Then the chicken comes. There are three types with a hot pot of shredded cheese. They turned on the hot pot (think fondue) so the cheese would melt. Perfect! We think we won the language barrier game. Winning!!!!
Then the waitress came back…not to check up on us, but with 3…that’s right….3 more platters of food. The look of shock and awe on our faces!!!! It was at that moment we knew we messed up. We had so much chicken in so many different flavors!!! We looked at lemons and made lemonade. We all tried a different flavor and they were all excellent! We dipped them in the cheese and OH MY GOD!!!!! Heaven!!!!
This was a happy accident, but an accident nonetheless. Then we thought about the bill. What will the bill be? Our attitude….YOLO!!!!!! We wound up packing up a lot of the chicken to bring back to the hotel. But guess how much the food cost? Just guess….$33.00 USD!!! All that food with appetizers, a side of rice and drinks….$33.00!!!!! Again…WINNING!!!!
What an experience! And the kicker…the waitress and owners spoke Korean…not Japanese!!!!! Total fail….but was it?
